Abraham’s story in the Book of Genesis teaches us why trusting God’s timing is better than trying to force His promises. Even though God gave Abraham clear promises, he still struggled with waiting and made mistakes by taking matters into his own hands. However, God remained faithful and fulfilled His promise at the right time. This message reminds us that faith grows in difficult seasons, and when we trust God’s timing instead of rushing the process, we allow His perfect plan to unfold in our lives.
You Don’t Have to Be Perfect for God to Use You
We often look at famous people and think they have it all together. However, when we meet them, we realize they are just normal. In the same way, we sometimes read the Bible and think people like Abraham were perfect. But that is not true.
Instead, the Bible shows us a perfect God working through imperfect people. In this message, we look at Abraham’s life and learn how God uses faith and trust, even when we make mistakes.
God Called Abraham to Walk by Faith
In the Book of Genesis, God made a big promise to Abraham. He said Abraham would become a great nation, have a great name, and bless all people.
So, Abraham obeyed. He left everything he knew and followed God. However, right after he stepped out in faith, a famine hit the land.
Because of this, Abraham could have wondered if he heard God wrong. Still, this moment teaches us something important about Abraham’s faith and trust.
Faith Grows in Difficult Seasons
Faith does not grow when life is easy. Instead, it grows when life is hard. For example, muscles grow when they face resistance. In the same way, our faith grows when we face challenges.
Although the famine was difficult, it was not a mistake. Rather, it was part of God’s plan to grow Abraham’s faith.
Therefore, the hard season you are in right now may be building your faith and trust in God.
When We Force God’s Promise, We Create Problems
Even though Abraham had faith, he still struggled. Instead of trusting God fully, he tried to fix things on his own.
For example:
- He lied about Sarah being his sister
- Later, he had a child with Hagar instead of trusting God’s promise
As a result, these choices caused problems.
When we try to force what God promised, we fight what God planned
This is a key lesson. God never asks us to rely on ourselves. Instead, He calls us to trust Him completely.
God’s Plan Requires Trust, Not Control
Abraham and Sarah both struggled with waiting. Because of that, they tried to take control instead of trusting God’s timing.
However, God’s plan is not built on self-reliance. It is built on faith and trust.
In the same way, we often try to rush the process. We want answers now. But God is asking us to trust Him step by step.
If God made a promise, then He will fulfill it.
God Prepares You Before the Promise
Before Abraham and Sarah had their son Isaac, God changed their names.
- Abram became Abraham (father of many)
- Sarai became Sarah (mother of nations)
So, why did God do this before the promise came?
Because God always prepares us before He fulfills the promise.
God cares more about who you become than how fast you receive the promise
In fact, Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90 when Isaac was born. Although it took time, God kept His promise.
God Calls His People to Stand Out
God also gave Abraham a covenant. This showed that his family belonged to Him.
Because of this, we learn something important:
God’s people are called to stand out, not blend in
Our lives should look different. Not because we are perfect, but because we follow God with faith and trust.
Conclusion
Abraham’s story shows us that we do not have to be perfect for God to use us. Even when Abraham made mistakes, God stayed faithful. In the same way, God is still working in your life today.
At Harvest Church, we are currently in a series called The Famous Ones. In this series, we look at real people in the Bible and learn how God worked through their lives. Each message reminds us that God’s plan is bigger than our mistakes and that faith and trust lead us forward. If you missed any part of this series, be sure to explore the other messages and continue growing in your faith journey.
